TMJ and TMD Imaging

We have all been there at some point. Sitting uncomfortably in the dentist chair getting X-rays during our yearly check-up. Getting X-rays of teeth is one thing, but getting a clear MRI scan of the jaw is another. At Medical Imaging Express we offer an easy solution to this issue, an open room MRI machine. This device is the only one-of-a-kind here in Greenville, SC. It makes dental imaging fast, precise, and painless. But, what are TMJ and TMD?

TMJ

Doctor Uses Pen To Point To Temporomandibular Joint On Plastic Skull

TMJ refers to the Temporomandibular Joint, which is the joint of the jaw. You have two joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull, the TMJ’s. These joints work as a sliding hinge as you move your mouth. Sometimes these joints can have problems and cause pain and discomfort.

Some symptoms of TMJ issues include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the ears, face, jaw, neck, or shoulders
  • Aching pain around your ear
  • Pain while chewing
  • Aching face pain
  • Jaw locking
  • Genetics, arthritis, or a jaw injury can also indicate a problem with the TMJ

While there is pain and discomfort with TMJ problems, they can usually be remedied without surgery. In most cases, doctors will start with noninvasive treatments, surgery is often the last resort.

TMD

Temporomandibular disorders or TMDs are disorders of the jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and nerves linked to chronic facial pain. In short, any problem that keeps the muscles, bones, and joints working in your jaw area falls under TMD.

TMJ and TMD differ because TMJ refers to the joint itself, while TMD refers to disorders caused by inflammation or misalignment of the TMJ.

Symptoms of TMD include:

  • Headaches
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw
  • Limited mouth motions
  • Grinding teeth
  • Clenching jaw
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Tingling in fingers or even numbness

How TMJ and TMD Imaging Works

Doctor And Assistant Discuss MRI Scans Of A Jaw

Often, TMJ problems and TMD can look like other health issues, making them hard to diagnose. By the time a doctor or dentist recommends getting imaging done the process needs to be fast and accurate.

Medical Imaging Express uses an open room MRI. This MRI machine differs from a standard MRI machine. An open room MRI can get sharper diagnostic accuracy and can adapt to more patients and more problems.

A specialized coil helps capture images of the soft tissue structures of the jaw. The lightweight and non-invasive coil are placed over the patient’s jaw and high-resolution images are captured. This imaging technique is much more comfortable than dental imaging. Using an open room MRI machine lets patients relax in an open space with quiet surroundings. This technology also cuts down the time spent in the MRI machine.

TMJ and TMD imaging is made easy at Medical Imaging Express. We offer same-day scheduling, non-invasive MRI experience, and fast results delivered by our team of board-certified radiologists. If you are looking for an easy and modern dental imaging solution, Medical Imaging Express is the place for you.
