Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, has a wide use in today’s medical practices. The open MRI is just another advancement as medical imaging continues to improve. Despite its popularity, the MRI as we know it has not been around very long. Main advancements in Magnetic Resonance Imaging find their beginnings in the 1970s and even the basis of the science was only discovered in the 1930s. The use of magnetic and radio technology has become so widely used that it is now one of the staples in medical diagnosis for many issues of the body. Read on to learn more about the origins of MRI.
The whole foundation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging is based on magnetic fields and radio waves. The phenomenon known as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, NMR, is the effect where atoms give off tiny radio signals when exposed to magnetic fields and radio waves.
For many years, NMR technology was used to study the composition of chemical compounds. Many people worked to get this technology into the medical field, but there were a few key people whose contributions led directly to the MRI we have today.
Paul Lauterbur – Worked with Peter Mansfield and did research on a new imaging technique using gradients. His experiments moved science from the single dimension of NMR to second dimension of spatial orientation, the foundation for MRI.
Peter Mansfield – Using gradients in magnetic field, signals could be mathematically analyzed, creating a useful imaging technique. Also speeded up the process significantly to be useful in medicine.
Raymond Damadian – Was granted the first patent for medical use of MRI. He discovered using magnetic resonance imaging as a tool for medical diagnosis. Discovered how to locate cancerous tissue based on signals that those tissues give off from being exposed to radio waves and magnetic fields. He created the first MRI machine in 1977, called the indomitable.
The science of MRI is based off of a lot of research from past scientists, but the fathers of the MRI as we know it are Lauterbur, Mansfield, and Damadian. MRI is a useful tool in medical diagnosis and has saved many lives by catching abnormalities in the body before they grow and cause trouble. The use of Magnetic fields and radio waves is safer on the body than x-rays and dyes. With the latest advancement of the open MRI, the process is even better and more comfortable for the patient.
