Body Sculpting: What Is It?

No, we’re not talking about sculpting out a body using a hammer and chisel (if only it were that easy). We’re talking about the safe and revolutionary method of removing fat cells using heating, cooling, or even ultrasound. Here at Medical Imaging Express, we believe an informed patient is the best patient, so we created this blog to ensure our clients have access to information about body sculpting.

Body sculpting has been around for some time now. It provides the results many have wished for when it comes to dealing with stubborn fat deposits on the body. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, how much you sweat, how strict your diet is, your body still holds onto stubborn fat! Body sculpting, or body contouring, is a safe, non-invasive procedure available for removing fat cells from a targeted area of the body. Common areas include under the chin, the back of the arm, thighs (inner and outer), flanks (or love handles), and back.

Your Options For Body Sculpting

As mentioned before, there are different methods of body sculpting, each with its own benefits. Before getting body sculpting done, it’s important to understand what kinds are available, so you can make the best decision for yourself. Below we will go over some of the common types of body sculpting.

Cryolipolysis:

In this method the target area is cooled down to as low as -11 degrees using an applicator, thereby killing the fat cells which are crystalized and flushed out through the body’s natural waste removal systems. In other words, they freeze the fat, and you pee it out. This method often requires multiple treatment sessions to see desired results.

Laser Lipolysis:

This treatment is very similar to cryolipolysis. It destroys fat cells and leaves them up to your own body to flush out. Only this treatment uses laser radiation to heat up the fat cells instead of freezing them.

Radiofrequency Lipolysis:

This method functions similarly, only using ultrasound to agitate, disconnect, and kill stubborn fat cells. This method, however, is known to be less painful, often having little to no discomfort involved.

Injection Lipolysis:

This method is a bit different than the others but achieves the same results. By injecting a natural metabolizer (deoxycholic acid) the fat cells are killed the same way they would be through your own metabolism, only boosted in the targeted area. The fat cells die away and are metabolized by your body.

Things To Remember

Now, there are a few things you need to remember when considering any of these body sculpting procedures.

  1. It’s NOT liposuction. Body sculpting is meant for targeted areas of fat when the patient is already at or near their target healthy weight. Liposuction removes much larger amounts of fat cells, is much more of an invasive procedure, and requires much more of a recovery time.
  1. IT IS SAFE! These methods are all FDA-approved and require little to no recovery time. You can quite possibly receive treatment and finish off the rest of your day like normal. There are side-effects, but they tend to be minimal and nothing more than an occasional ache or tender spot.
  1. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Our genetics are one of the many things that we can’t control. Those same genetics tell our bodies where to store fat and whether to let it go or not. Sometimes our bodies need a little extra help to achieve the body we’ve worked so long and so hard for. These safe procedures provide exactly that.
