Traditional Supine (laying down) MRI verses Weight Bearing MRI.
The upright, weight-bearing MRI at Medical Imaging Express offers the latest in global technology – right here in Greenville, SC. This is the first and only weight-bearing open MRI technology in South Carolina.
We can scan patients lying down, as you would normally. We can also tilt the whole magnet up and perform weight-bearing scans.

Higher Diagnostic Accuracy
During a weight-bearing scan, patients are scanned in an upright or semi-upright position, replicating the normal compression that tissues undergo on a daily basis. This is critical in diagnosing certain conditions of the spine, hips, knees and ankles, such as:
- nerve compression or impingement
- vertebral body slippage (spondylolisthesis)
- vertebral subluxation
- cartilage loss
- joint instability
- sports injuries
- spinal injuries

Benefits of Weight-Bearing Imaging:
- Impressive image quality
- Open permanent magnet
- Rotating gantry
- Weight-Bearing: patient’s position becomes an integral part of the examination’s outcome
- Optimized, ergonomic patient bed for easy positioning and excellent comfort during exams
- Additional diagnostic capabilities: since the force of gravity generates bio-mechanical changes in anatomy, MR imaging in a natural, stand-up position allows you to attain important additional information compared to traditional MRI
- User-defined sequences and customized examination protocols
- Multi Planar Scout
- eXP Technology: for faster and better MR Imaging
Alternative to Conventional MRI
Patients who have difficulty lying down during a medical examination due to a medical condition or chronic pain now have an alternative to conventional MRI. The open and tilting design is a new and innovative way of doing MRI in which the position of the patient becomes an integral part of the outcome of the examination.
